For a growing share of searches, Google now shows an AI-generated answer above the organic results. The user reads it and frequently does not scroll. That changes what winning a search actually means.

The shift, stated plainly

Ranking first used to mean getting the click. Increasingly it means being the source an AI answer cites, and the click is a bonus.

This is being called AEO or GEO depending on who is writing. The underlying idea is the same: optimise to be quoted, not only to be listed.

What actually gets quoted

Social Beat, one of the larger Indian agencies publishing on this, ran a piece in 2026 on ranking inside AI Overviews, which tells you the Indian market is taking it seriously rather than treating it as a Western problem.

From what I see holding up across queries, four things matter more than they used to.

The India angle

Two practical consequences for an Indian business.

First, local queries are where AI answers are weakest, because the underlying data is thin. A page that states real local specifics, actual prices, actual coverage areas, actual timelines, has a better chance of being the cited source than a generic national page.

Second, your Google Business Profile matters more than ever. For anything with local intent, the profile is a heavily weighted, structured, verified source. A business without one is invisible to the layer that increasingly answers the question. Verification typically takes 5 to 14 days by postcard or video, so it is worth starting before you need it.

A worked example of the first point. Searching for a digital marketing agency in a smaller Haryana district returns mostly template location pages from companies headquartered elsewhere, while the same search for Indore returns 10 genuine local agencies in the top 10. The thinner the local data, the more a page with real specifics stands out to both the ranking system and the answer layer.

What to do this month

What not to do

Do not block AI crawlers reflexively. Some publishers have reason to; a business trying to be found does not. If you want to be the cited answer, you have to be readable.

And do not chase this at the expense of the basics. A site with no links and no reviews will not be cited regardless of how well its FAQ markup is written. Authority still comes first.
